The Adventure:
Seeing wild elk in North Carolina/Tennessee is quite rare, EXCEPT at Cataloochee.  Get there at dawn or dusk for your best chance of seeing these incredible animals within feet of your car.
Type:
Drive-thru
Distance:
3 miles of road to view elk from the car.  The best animal viewing starts after the Cataloochee Campground as the road continues for another mile and a half before ending.
Gear:
Camera with a long lens.
Don't Forget:
These are wild animals so don't approach the animals.  It's rude and stupid.  There are other things to explore as well including a historic school house, streams, hiking and horse riding.
My Take:
Seeing wild elk at anytime is cool, but seeing males during the rut would be the best (begins mid-September).  That's still on my list.
